Edward lost his left leg as Truth demanded payment for the failed exchange. Alphonse lost his entire body in the backlash. In a desperate move, Edward offered his own right arm to anchor his brother's soul to a suit of armor. This act saved Alphonse from total erasure but trapped him in metal.
