Alphonse's existence is defined by the consequences of human transmutation. Edward sacrificed his right arm to seal Alphonse's soul into armor, creating a being who is almost invincible yet unable to feel touch or pain. Their journey across Amestris is driven by the search for the Philosopher's Stone, an object capable of restoring their physical forms. Alongside the homunculi created by Father, they uncover dark truths about the military and alchemy. Alphonse trains in hand-to-hand combat under Izumi Curtis, using his metal frame as a weapon while maintaining a gentle demeanor. His struggle involves protecting friends, confronting his own fading humanity, and ultimately sacrificing his soul to restore Edward's arm, after which he is later returned to his original body.

In Their Own Story

In the manga and Brotherhood adaptation, Alphonse and Edward face General Olivier Mira Armstrong in the north before being manipulated by Father into serving as sacrifices. Separated from Edward, Alphonse is captured by Pride but later trapped within a cave alongside Van Hohenheim to neutralize the homunculus. During the final battle, he requests help from May Chang to return Edward's lost arm, sacrificing his own soul to do so. After Father's defeat, Edward gives up his alchemy ability to restore Alphonse's body and soul. They return to Resembool before separating; Alphonse travels to Xing with two chimera comrades to study further under May. In the first anime adaptation, the story diverges: Scar transfers an incomplete Philosopher's Stone into Alphonse to save him from Kimblee's explosion. Captured by Dante and targeted for consumption by Gluttony, Alphonse uses the stone to heal Edward after his brother's apparent death, destroying his own armor in the process before Edward resurrects him.

Alphonse Elric serves as the moral compass of the duo, balancing Edward's impulsiveness with patience. His primary combat style relies on immense physical strength and durability derived from his armor, making him a formidable hand-to-hand fighter trained by Izumi Curtis. Unlike Edward, he cannot feel pain or temperature, but this limitation also grants him near-invincibility as long as the blood seal on his chest remains unbroken. Key to his character arc is the fear of losing his memories and soul while trapped in metal. In the first anime, he briefly becomes a living Philosopher's Stone, changing his role from seeker to target. His journey concludes with a choice: in the manga, he refuses a weak body until it can fight; in the film Conqueror of Shamballa, he stays in a parallel world with Edward after opening the gate with Wrath.

• In a prototype of the series, a character named 'Alphonse' was a flying squirrel, but this was a separate early concept, not a version of Alphonse Elric.
• His Japanese voice actress is Rie Kugimiya, who also performed tracks on two character CDs released under the name Hagaren Song File – Alphonse Elric.
• Author Hiromu Arakawa has stated she draws Alphonse in human form occasionally for reference, but the claim that she 'often' does so to remember how to draw him is unverified and likely exaggerated.
• In Chapter 40 of the manga, a conversation with Edward was used by Arakawa to depict Alphonse crying despite having no face or body.
